AC: THE AMERICA'S CUP
This is the most prestigious finishing line in the sailing world. Over time, the America's Cup has been transformed into an occasion of high life and economic promotion. Sir Thomas Lipton never won, but his tea became the most famous in the Americas. On an equal footing, the French Baron, of Turin birth, invaded America with his ball-point pens. The possibility of Italian participation goes back to the sixties. Lawyer Agnelli tried to get backing from president Kennedy. The reply from the American organisers of the time was laconic:
"Anyone can do good business, but not the America's Cup". We had to wait until 1983 to see the first Italian boat, the much followed "Azzurra", entrusted to helmsman Mauro Pelaschier.
